LLSA is a student organization dedicated to providing support to Latino/a
students at the University of Chicago Law School. LLSA’s principal objective
is to create and foster an environment in which Latino students, as well
as the Law School community, can discover and develop a deeper understanding
and appreciation of the Latino cultural heritage and the issues that face
Latinos residing in the United States.
To achieve this end, LLSA organizes a variety of educational
and cultural activities throughout the academic school year; which include
hosting speakers to discuss career and legal topics affecting Latinos/as,
co-sponsoring annual panel on minorities in the judiciary, co-sponsoring
annual immigration conference, co-sponsoring diversity week, and hosting
the Latino alumni mentoring program. In addition, LLSA works in conjunction
with RACE, the heading organization for student minority groups at the Law
School, and ILLSA, the Illinois Latino/a Law Student Association, to organize
other activities throughout the year. LLSA also encourages its members to
become involved in public interest organizations that serve the Latino community
in Chicago.
Most importantly, however, our organization is committed to
increasing the presence of Latinas/os at the Law School, from the student
body to the faculty. LLSA works in conjunction with the Admissions Office
to increase the enrollment of Latino/a students, by serving as hosts for
visiting students and working a Phone-a-Thon for admitted Latino students.
We also endeavor to achieve the appointment of Latinos/as to the University
of Chicago Law School faculty. LLSA is committed to working with alumni,
faculty, and the administration to bring tenured Latinos/as to campus.
Acknowledging our member’s need for life outside of the Law
School, LLSA sponsors several social events each year. These informal gatherings
range from dinners downtown and potluck dinners, to La Super Fiesta and
a Cinco de Mayo Celebration.
