A letter to admitted students from LLSA Co-Chairs Jenny Maldonado and Carmen Candia:
Dear Admitted Student:
Congratulations on your acceptance to the Law School at the University of Chicago! We want to welcome you and introduce ourselves. As you sort through all the information you’ve received we hope you find this letter helpful in answering any questions you may have about the Latino presence at the Law School.
The Latina/o Law Students Association is a student organization dedicated to providing support to Latina/o students at the Law School. Our principal objective is to create and foster an environment in which the Law School community can discover and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Latino culture and the issues that face Latinos.
To achieve this end, we organize a variety of educational, cultural, and social activities throughout the academic school year; which include hosting and co-sponsoring speakers and panels to discuss career and legal topics affecting Latinas/os. We also co-sponsor Diversity Week here at the Law School, organize networking opportunities, and conduct an annual mentoring program with Latina/o alumni of the Law School.
Most importantly, however, our organization is committed to increasing the presence of Latinas/os at the Law School in both the student body and the faculty. To that end, we work with the Admissions office and the faculty appointment committee to recruit the top Latinas/os in the country.
We are excited about the prospect of your attending the Law School. We are a fun, active, and strong voice on campus that will improve with your presence. We encourage you to contact members of our organization with any questions you may have about the Law School, the University, living in Chicago, or anything else. Please also consider attending Admitted Students Weekend on April 1st – 3rd. We have some fun events planned and will be happy to accommodate you should you need a place to stay!
